Gingivoplasty and whitening in a young patient
Gingivoplasty is without doubt one of the treatments most in demand among people with a gummy smile.
Altered passive eruption is generally a disorder of tooth eruption in which the gum does not recede enough as the permanent teeth come through, so that it covers part of the crown of the teeth.
That means the teeth look shorter because of the excess gum, and also that the gum margin is neither even nor uniform.
TREATMENT:
Gingivoplasty and teeth whitening
DURATION:
One month

Under normal conditions the gum should cover the teeth at the neck; in these cases, however, it covers much of the tooth.
When we talk about a gummy smile, we are talking about there being “too much gum” and about needing to trim it so that the teeth are more visible and have the ideal shape and size.
The treatment for this patient with a gummy smile
In this case the patient came to Clínica Peydro looking to improve the appearance of her gums and bring back the natural color of her teeth.
To do that, we planned to solve the case in two steps:
- Gingivoplasty: first we measure tooth by tooth how much excess gum there is and draw exactly what is needed on each individual tooth. That way we expose the clinical crown of every tooth affected by the excess gum.
- Teeth whitening: once the gum has healed, we can start the whitening treatment.
In the end we achieved what the patient was looking for: a wider, brighter smile with less inflamed gums and more tooth on show.
