PREVENTION AND MAINTENANCE
How Often Should You See the Dentist?
The short answer is: it depends.
The more accurate answer is that it depends on your oral health, habits, and specific needs.
For years, the general rule was that once a year was enough.
The reality, however, is that not everyone faces the same risk for decay, periodontal issues, or tooth wear.
That is why at Clínica Peydro we prefer to personalize our recommendations rather than apply a one-size-fits-all rule.

Why do regular check-ups matter?
Because many dental problems cause no symptoms in their early stages.
Small cavities rarely hurt.
Gum disease usually advances slowly.
And many functional problems can develop over years without the patient noticing.
By the time there is pain, the problem is typically much more advanced.
Regular check-ups let us catch these things before they turn into more complex treatment.

So how often should you come in?
If your oral health is good
Most patients should have a check-up at least once a year. That visit lets us confirm everything is progressing as it should and catch anything unusual in its early stages.
If you smoke
Tobacco raises the risk of periodontal disease and other oral conditions. For that reason we usually recommend more frequent check-ups.
If you have a history of cavities or gum disease
In these cases check-ups every six months may be advisable. Regular monitoring helps keep things under control and prevents complications later.
If you clench or grind your teeth
Bruxism can cause tooth wear, fractures, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) concerns. Regular check-ups help manage this before major damage occurs.
If you are undergoing orthodontic treatment
Patients in orthodontic treatment need more frequent visits so the case can be monitored properly.

And if nothing hurts?
This is probably the sentence we hear most often at the practice.
And that is exactly why we insist so much on check-ups.
Most dental issues begin completely without any pain.
Feeling no discomfort does not mean everything is fine; it simply means there is still time to prevent major issues.
One visit a year can prevent significantly more complex treatments
Very often a check-up of just a few minutes picks up something that can be resolved quite simply.
Waiting several years usually means longer treatment, more complex and more expensive.
That is why we see regular check-ups as one of the best investments anyone can make in their health.

How long has it been since your last check-up?
If it has been longer than you would care to admit, do not worry. What matters is starting today.
