Composite veneers in a patient with periodontitis
When a patient has chipped and broken teeth, the challenge is not only to restore the appearance of their smile but also to identify and correct the underlying cause of the wear.
In this case, the patient came to our clinic worried about his chipped and broken teeth. A detailed examination revealed generalized wear on both the front and the back teeth. We saw a completely unstable bite in which the teeth were wearing down evenly, causing loss of enamel and fractures.
In this case the malocclusion was causing the teeth to wear down continuously.
To correct the malocclusion and stabilize the patient’s bite, we started the treatment with clear aligners planned by Dr. Diego Peydro. This kind of orthodontic treatment is ideal for adults who want to correct the alignment of their teeth discreetly.
The orthodontic treatment lasted around 18 months. During that time, the clear aligners gradually moved the teeth into the right position, correcting the bite and eliminating the undue friction between the teeth. That step was crucial to ensure that the future restorations would last.
With the bite stabilized, the next step was to improve the appearance of the patient’s gums. Dr. Marta Peydro carried out a gingivoplasty to remove the excess gum that was hiding part of the natural teeth
Before applying the composite restorations, we carried out teeth whitening to ensure that every tooth had an even, bright color. That step is crucial for the best esthetic result, since composite veneers and other restorations are designed to match the natural color of the teeth.
Finally, we went on to restore the damaged teeth. For the back teeth we used composite overlays, while the front teeth were restored with composite veneers.
Those veneers were carefully sculpted to restore the original shape and size of the teeth, giving a natural, attractive appearance.
