Orthodontics and dental implants… how are they connected?

Every day we see people at our clinic who want to improve the way their teeth look. We see all kinds of patients: on the one hand, people who want to solve their dental problems with orthodontic treatment for the first time. They have never had orthodontic treatment before and decide to do something about various dental problems by coming to our clinic. We also see people who had orthodontic treatment at another practice in the past and are not happy with the result. On top of these two types of patient, we also see people who had teeth extracted in the past and never had them replaced with dental implants. It is this last group we are talking about in today’s post.

How can orthodontics recover the space left by extracted teeth?

You see, when a tooth is extracted, wherever it sits in the mouth, it is vitally important that we replace it as soon as possible. We often let time go by without placing dental implants, perhaps because the missing tooth is a molar or one whose absence cannot be seen at a glance. You should know that, as time passes, the teeth next to the extracted one start to move into the free space, tipping over and changing their own position.

To recover the space “taken over” by the neighbouring teeth and be able to place a dental implant where it belongs, the patient needs orthodontic treatment.

With orthodontic treatment we were able to recover the lost space and place the dental implants. The orthodontic treatment used in this case was Damon braces, with which we opened up the space needed.
