Agenesis of the lateral incisors and replacement with implants
Dental agenesis is when one or more teeth do not develop naturally. This anomaly can occur to different degrees, from a single missing tooth to several.
Today we are showing you the case of a patient of around 45 who had dental agenesis of the lateral incisors as well as very severe crowding
The patient came to the practice with a history of dental agenesis since childhood. The teeth affected were the upper lateral incisors, which compromised not only the look of his teeth but also his ability to chew and speak.
On top of that, the patient had very severe crowding as well as a crossbite
During the initial assessment, X-rays and a full clinical examination were carried out. The X-rays confirmed the congenital absence of the upper lateral incisors. How did we approach his treatment? First, before extracting the incisors, his mouth had to be put in order. That is why he first put himself in Dr. Diego Peydro’s hands for clear aligner treatment. Once we had distributed the spaces correctly, aligned his teeth and solved the crossbite he had at the start, we moved on to the second stage of his treatment. Specifically, we went ahead with extracting the baby teeth and replacing them with same-day dental implants, achieving a brilliant result

The surgery was carried out in two main stages:
- Placing the implant: incisions were made in the gums to expose the alveolar bone. The implant sites were drilled and titanium implants were inserted where the lateral incisors should be. After placement, the gums were sutured and the implants were left to integrate with the bone, a process known as osseointegration, which took around three months.
- Fitting the crowns: once osseointegration was successful, small incisions were made to fit the abutments onto the implants. Impressions were then taken so that the final crowns could be made and fixed onto the implant abutments.

The patient made an excellent recovery after surgery with no significant complications. The implant crowns blended harmoniously with the rest of the teeth, giving a natural appearance. His chewing function was also fully restored.
