Spring! How many articles have you read by now about diet and the dreaded beach-body countdown? Lose those extra pounds, which foods make you retain water, which ones cause premature aging… When it comes to staying in shape there is no shortage of information reaching us, but… what about our mouths? Which foods damage our teeth? They are with us all our lives, yet they hardly ever take center stage in fashion and health magazines or in the media we consume every day.
In today’s post we bring you information on the foods that damage your teeth and that are best consumed with care. Ready to find out what they are?
- Colored drinks. Chief among them: Coffee. It is good for our health, but it will very likely darken your teeth if you drink too much of it. With one coffee a day your teeth will not darken or stain at all. We recommend brushing your teeth every time you have one. Red wine. Its antioxidant power is well known. What you may not know is that it protects against decay and, like coffee, can end up staining your teeth. Tea. We add tea to the list of drinks that can attack the whiteness of your teeth. If you drink too much of it, its tannins will end up affecting your natural white.

- Sugar. Nutritionists and doctors constantly warn us about the risks of eating sugar. The most radical among them recommend cutting it out of our diet entirely to avoid serious health problems. Where teeth are concerned, we have been warning for a long time about the risks of eating products with sugar in them. So there you have it: keep sweet foods to an absolute minimum and, of course, brush your teeth every time you eat them.
- Citrus fruits and berries. Berries are very good for our health, but eating a lot of them can damage our teeth. What is more, the acidity of citrus fruits encourages the erosion of our tooth enamel, raising the risk of decay and increasing tooth sensitivity as well.
- Pickles and gherkins. Their high acid content, from the vinegar they are pickled in, can cause problems for our teeth.
- Sugary soft drinks. They are very acidic and have a high sugar content, so drinking them day in, day out will damage our teeth as well as our general health.
As with everything in life, it is excess that causes problems. By that we mean there is nothing wrong with eating these things now and then. It is heavy, habitual consumption that will cause problems for your dental health.
