A patient whose gummy smile was solved with clear aligners
Today we are presenting the case of a middle-aged patient who came to our clinic to improve the look of her smile. After studying her case, the doctor detected the following problems:
- A severe class II malocclusion
- A very severe, asymmetric gummy smile
- Significant canting of her occlusal plane
- A disorder and pain in the temporomandibular joint
Once we had studied her case, the patient told us she had come to the clinic because she felt her smile was crooked and that she showed a lot of gum when she smiled. From the outset our first treatment option was clear aligners, since we could see that the patient had a severe class II malocclusion, along with multiple areas of gum recession caused by the lack of stability in her bite.
This problem was damaging her oral tissue and her gums. In the preliminary study we also found that her occlusal plane was canted and that the midlines were completely deviated. Because of the canting of the occlusal plane and how pronounced the asymmetry was, the patient had an asymmetric gummy smile, especially on the left side. She was not willing to wear braces, so clear aligner treatment with the Invisalign technique was proposed to resolve the class II malocclusion, correct the canting of the occlusal plane, center the midlines, widen her arches so that her smile would be wider and fuller, and correct the asymmetric smile that worried her so much. The treatment lasted around 2 years and used Invisalign clear aligners alone, so no gingivoplasty was needed to correct the gummy smile she had.
