Today we are showing you the case of a patient in his early fifties who came to us asking for help with periodontal disease that was making it impossible to eat.
His periodontitis was already at a very advanced stage, so the simple everyday task of eating was a real ordeal for him. After studying his case carefully, Dr. Marta Peydro determined that the patient had periodontal disease at an advanced, terminal stage.
The patient had severe bone loss, so the teeth remaining in his mouth were not properly anchored, which meant the case could only be planned by extracting the teeth and placing implants to replace the ones that had been lost.
The treatment plan for the case
Having diagnosed the disease, the doctor drew up a treatment plan involving same-day implant surgery, following these steps:
- Step 1: So the implants would not be rejected, we cleaned the gums and teeth to disinfect the area before placing the same-day implants.
- Step 2: At that same visit we extracted the teeth affected by periodontitis and placed the dental implants. All in under 24 hours.
- Step 3: We fitted the same-day prosthesis and, after surgery, took measurements from the patient so we could make the temporary teeth. The teeth are fixed and made of resin, which gives a perfect appearance as well as excellent function, since the patient can eat from the very first moment
- Step 4: Four months after placing the implants we made the final prosthesis with fixed porcelain teeth.
Even though the case took complex planning, the patient needed only 6 upper dental implants and 6 lower dental implants. We first operated on the upper arch and, 15 days later, on the lower teeth. On the day of each surgery the patient came to the practice in the morning, went home at midday and came back in the afternoon to have the fixed teeth put in.
